What is a Pineapple Ukulele?

Ukuleles truly do come in all shapes and sizes. The pineapple ukulele is a popular choice for players looking for something a little different in the shape of their instrument. But, looks aren’t the only thing that set the pineapple ukulele apart—there is a lot more to this special little instrument!

History

In 1916, a Hawaiian by the name of Samuel Kamaka had a ukulele store. Samuel was passionate about making quality instruments and wanted to create a body with a unique and different sound. In 1927, he came up with a rounder body that reminded his friends of a pineapple. The name stuck, and the pineapple ukulele remains a staple in the community today.

Size

The pineapple ukulele is comparable in size to the soprano, which is traditionally considered the smallest size ukulele. Although similar in length, it is important to note that the pineapple has a larger body.

Most ukuleles have a tapered shape. Their bodies are largest on one end, taper in, and round out again. The pineapple ukulele is unique in that it is round and oval shaped without a taper. This structure ultimately results in a larger body. Check out the difference between our Wanderer Soprano and Pineapple Soprano:

Sound

The pineapple ukulele is known for its especially round shape and “pineapple”- like appearance. Many players may not consider that the different shape also results in a unique sound. Because the body is larger, there is more space for the sound to resonate. As a result, the sound is more mellow and full than traditional shaped ukuleles.

The tapered body of the traditional soprano ukulele results in a brighter sound, while the pineapple body creates a space for warmth and fullness.
